News story SRI

Rice is the King crop in India. Traditionally Rice crop considered as Water loving crop which has unique character to grow in standing water.  Research also revealed that around 5000 liters of water is required to produce on kilo of rice.  Deficit of water due to many reasons the area under rice has been drastically reduced. The average yield of rice in conventional method is about three tones only.                      
SRI Technology is an alternative technology for conventional method .SRI involves significantly reducing the seed rate, transplanting single seedlings when they are much younger than usual, using less amount of water at critical stages of this growth and improving soil condition with Organic manure.
Department of Agriculture has provided training to farmers to motivate them to adopt SRI method of cultivation an hundreds of thousands of hectares are grown using SRI technique, in which the average yield is at least 40 percent more than conventional method of rice production. Resulting that  Tamilnadu farmer S.sedhu madhavan from Alanganallur, Madurai District has harvested a record yield of nearly 24 tones paddy per hectare using SRI who received gold medal and cash award from Tamilnadu Chief Minister. Adoption of SRI would lead to increase the Production and ensures food security.
